Enlarged pores, dull complexions, and other facial imperfections or abnormalities can detract from your well being and appearance, no matter how healthy and young you feel. Sun damaged skin is the response of chronic exposure to the sun. The sun can alter skin structure. The sun causes changes in both your upper layer and deeper layer of skin. The upper layer is known as the epidermis and the lower layer is the dermis. The upper layer of skin is meant to protect the deeper layer, however as you skin gets more exposed to sun, this protective layer becomes less effective and this results in a thin skinned look. This lack of protection now allows the sun to cause changes in the dermis of the skin. These changes appear as “age spots, freckling, or rough skin”. These changes are often most prevalent on your face, neck, and hands. The sun also destroys collagen, and with this destruction, wrinkles form. Good sun protection is the best way to prevent these changes to your skin. We recommend always wearing a sunscreen with a minimum SPF15 rating. Our staff at the clinic is always free to guide you on effective skin care products that we recommend to rejuvenate, and protect your skin.
Treatment
The changes that have occurred to your skin as a consequence of sun damage can effectively be treated in many different ways. First and foremost, we believe that prevention for any further damage is the best solution for long term care of your skin. This can be achieved with proper protection with certain clothing, and effective sunscreens.
The changes that have already occurred can be treated with microdermabrasion, glycolic peels, and/or IPL Photorejuvenation. Both of these procedures have been shown to improve age spots, freckles, rough skin, and wrinkles. IPL technology improves both the superficial and deeper skin layers and rejuvenates the skin while at the same time delivering beneficial thermal energy to deep tissue. IPL Photorejuvenation has been shown to improve collagen formation within the skin thus improving fine wrinkles and providing a refreshed, healthier appearance to the skin. Please feel free to check out the links on each of these procedures to get more information. As well please take the opportunity to have a complimentary consultation with our physicians who will in detail answer any of your questions.
