Botox®

Botox® for Hyperhidrosis

BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) is the latest treatment approved by Health Canada for Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the underarms).

Treatment:
Focal Injections consist of treatment with Botulinum toxin type A of the affected area(s). These injections block the neurochemical activity of the nerves, which cause the excessive sweating. Blocking these nerve impulses reduces sweating. The procedure takes about 15 minutes. For treatment of the underarms, face and head, most often anesthesia is not used. To minimize discomfort, some patients prefer a pretreatment with a mild local anesthetic such as EMLA®. Treatment can be repeated as necessary.

Effectiveness:
The percent of reduction in sweating in a clinical study was 83% in 95% of participants. The effect of the treatment can be immediate or take up to a week to begin.

Duration:
The average duration of the effect after a single treatment was 7 months in the same study, and approximately 30% of the patients had effects lasting greater then a year. Your sweating will gradually return, and your own comfort will dictate when you should repeat treatment.

Limitations:
Side effects, if they occur, are temporary. A rare reported side effect was perceived increased sweating in other areas. Other side effects may include pain at the site of the injection. No, BOTOX Cosmetic® is NOT botulism and it will not cause food poisoning. Botulism is the name of an illness not the name of the product. BOTOX Cosmetic® is a natural, purified protein. It is an approved prescription drug that is used in very tiny doses.

What can I expect during the treatment?
Generally, after the consultation, the procedure only takes up to 15 minutes. It is injected with a very tiny needle. It is so quick and safe that you can immediately return to your daily activities (and no one will know you have had it done!)

How quickly does it work? Is it Permanent?
It can take up to 2 weeks for it to take full effect. No BOTOX Cosmetic® is not permanent. It lasts between 3-4 months on average but everyone is different.

Does it hurt?
Most patients say it feels just like quick little pinches although everyone is different. Our patients usually say, “Is that all?”

What are the side effects?
Side effects are very rare and are not permanent. Rarely, there can be a slight headache or some minor bruising which is easily covered up with makeup.
